Kengo Kuma’s The Exchange

Wireframe, Discretize, Emerging

In The Exchange by Kengo Kuma, Ribbons of wood have spiraled around the internal mass, making a dynamic façade which hide and reveal the functional core at the same time. This, in my opinion, is how the wireframe approach can be the main approach in this project.

Since discretization “means working on the texture that generates the perception of form”, the timbers (that are the main external material in this building) together can make whole different unity in comparison to a single wooden element.

Eventually, if we’d separated every single timber, this amazing building would not have been perceived like this. That’s why emerging can be the third approach for The Exchange.
